My
car is a 1957 100-6 (Longbridge-built early 100-6 BN4). The car is
"ice blue poly" with a lobelia blue insert (same color as typically
found on 100S), but not a stock healey combination.
I bought my Healey with the 240Z motor already installed. As the story
goes, the car was found by a mechanic who worked in a wrecking yard
back in the 70's....he found a 240Z wrecked with 30,000miles on it,
and did the conversion. He fabricated some very crude motor mounts
which don't look like Healey to me, and are only part Datsun. The
transmission tunnel was modified only slightly to allow for the bell
housing to clear (basically a cut was made and a sheet metal "hump"
was installed. The only real clearance issue is with the rear carb....it comes within1/4" of the steering column, and I had to use an elbow to mount the rear air filter perpendicular to the carb. I'm running a direct-drive fan and the stock Healey radiator with no problems. I had to fabricate a small rear trans. mount using 4 bolts to mount to the frame rails, so far no problems. Since the Datsun motor is lighter than the Healey motor, I've installed about 3/4" spacers under the lower front spring plate to bring the height close to stock. I'm running the stock drum brakes which work okay, but someday would like to switch to discs on front and rear if possible. I've got a tube shock conversion kit ready to install but don't know what shocks to use. I'm running 72-spoke wheels with 185/70 tires ( I originally had 48 spoke whls/ 165 tires but broke spokes weekly). I'm also thinking of fabricating a rear small-diam anti-sway bar to cure some of the understeer as I've switched to a large diam. front bar and need to balance the car out more. Using Healey brake and clutch master cylinders. Stock rear-end. It's been a great car....reliable in 15years of recreational driving (I've had zero problems related to drivetrain), and could easily be switched back to original (not that I would consider it). |
